NO. 785 Thermolab Dilatometer
This is a complete high temperature-testing laboratory for use with the 1 1/8 x 2 in. dia. (28.575 x 50.8 mm) sand specimen. When equipped with recommended accessories, it will determine all of the properties listed below:
  • Hot Strength
  • Hot Deformation
  • Hot Collapsibility (underload)
  • Expansion-contraction
  • Spalling
  • Penetration
  • Atmosphere Effects
  • Green Compressive Strength
  • Dry Compressive Strength
  • Air-Set Compressive Strength
  • Shock Load Expansion
  • Restraining Load

Operated normally from room temperature to 2750°F (1510°C), but it can operate up to 2850°F (1565°C) for short periods. The load range is 0-1,000 psi (0-70.3 kg/cm2).

Ideal for high temperature testing of molding materials for plant control tests. It uses the 1 1/8 x 2 in. dia. specimen, proven best because it does not spall excessively at high temperatures.

The unit is in a sturdy steel cabinet on which is mounted a well-insulated furnace. Four high-temperature heating elements surround the specimen to provide uniform heat distribution. The furnace hearth has a usable interior cross-section of 362 in. Height of the hearth is 5 in. (127 mm). Bottom opening in the furnace is 2 1/4 in. (57.15 mm) in diameter.

A Pyrex glass port permits observation of the specimen and a colored filter protects the eyes. The entire port assembly may be removed to accommodate the No. 762 Expansion Micrometer and to permit easy inspection and thorough cleaning.

The furnace is raised to the upper position to load and the test specimen placed on the bottom refractory post attached to the loading mechanism. The counterbalanced furnace is easily lowered around the specimen. The specimen is loaded at a desired rate by means of an adjustable-volume oil pump. The load is shown on the sensitive 0-100 lb. (45.4 kg) gauge as well as the 0 to 1000 lb. (454 kg) test gauge. Both gauges have relief valves to prevent overloading. The relief valve for the 100 lb. (45.36 kg) gauge is set at 85 lbs. (38.5 kg). This allows core collapsibility to be determined at this load. The valves may be adjusted to lower loads.

A special hooded upper post that completely shrouds the test specimen is available. This makes it possible to test for hot strength, collapsibility, or penetration in the specimen’s "own atmosphere". For cured sand testing the No. 787-B Accessory is recommended to maintain a controlled atmosphere.

Accessories for measuring hot deformation and expansion are available.

Requires a No. 754-A Sand Rammer with a No. 315-17 Rammer Base.

Metric scale available on request.
