NO. 454-A & NO. 454-B Mold Strength Tester
Used to measure the green compressive strength of mold surfaces. This pocket-sized instrument gives a strength reading comparable to the green compressive strength test obtained on a standard laboratory specimen, rammed to the same degree as the mold.

It has a spring-loaded penetrator which is pushed into the mold face to the depth of the scribed line. The pressure required to push it to this depth is shown on the dial which reads in compressive strength.

Mold strength is the product of the amount of bond in the sand plus the ramming energy used. The tendency to cut, wash and swell is largely regulated by mold face strength. Variations over the vertical and horizontal faces of a mold can be quite large. It is essential to know and control mold strengths before casting finish and dimension can be improved and stabilized.
